Flute Basics

Lesson 1 Assembling the Flute

Lesson 2 Finger Positions on the Flute

Take a look at the two hands below. The numbers correspond to your fingers.

You should place your fingers as shown on the diagram below. At first, it may feel awkward, as your hand is not used to holding the flute. But don't worry, as soon as about 5 minutes, you'll get used to it. Promise!

* You may not have to hold down both of your little (pinky) fingers (L5 & L5) for now. However, you must try to keep your right little finger (R5) down. You will need it when more than your left little finger.

You don't have to place anything at all on the white/unshaded keys. In the later lessons, only the black keys will be used to show note fingerings. So you must learn to grip the flute!

Lesson 3 Embochure

Have hard time prouncing that strange word? This might help ... say "om-BO-shur". ^_^

This lesson is slightly harder than the previous one as it will depend on how well you can create a sound using the headjoint of your flute alone. But don't you worry ^_^.

The photo below shows how you should position the flute on your lips but doesn't show you how to do it. So, you will need to experiment.

Tip: Practice this infront of a mirror so you can see for yourself how you are doing.

Look closely at the picture. See how there is still a bit of the hole showing? This means that you don't and shouldn't swallow the lip plate and blowing at it like its a rubber balloon.

Basically, the air just has to pass throught the plate and NOT GOING INTO the flute!

The sound you should be aiming for a consistent clear note and not an airy, fluttering note. Try it!
